Review DEFOREST Very Rare Early Oscillion Transmitting Tube Type

The Deforest 2Q15 1919 Oscillation Transmitting Tube is a vintage electronic component with a rich history and significant value in the world of radio technology. This tube, manufactured by Def Forest in 1919, is a testament to the early days of radio broadcasting and the role of vacuum tubes in the evolution of electronic communication.

The Deforest 2Q15 is an oscillation tube, specifically designed for use in radio transmitters. It operates on a frequency range of about 200 to 1500 kHz, making it suitable for medium wave AM radio broadcasts. The tube's primary function is to generate a high frequency oscillation, which is then amplified and modulated to carry audio signals over the airwaves.

The Deforest 2Q15 is a triode tube, meaning it has three electrodes: the cathode, grid, and plate. The cathode emits electrons, which are controlled by the grid and accelerated towards the plate. The interaction between these electrodes creates an electrical signal that can be amplified or modulated as needed.

Physically, the Deforest 2Q15 is a glass enclosed device with metal components, including the grid and plate. The plate is coated with a material to increase its ability to attract electrons, a process known as grid coating. The tube is powered by a high voltage DC supply, typically between 100 and 300 volts.

In terms of performance, the Deforest 2Q15 is a versatile and reliable tube, capable of delivering consistent performance over a wide range of frequencies. Its age and historical significance, however, make it a valuable collectible for radio enthusiasts and vintage electronics collectors.

In conclusion, the Deforest 2Q15 1919 Oscillation Transmitting Tube is a fascinating piece of radio technology history. Its function as an oscillation tube in early AM radio transmitters, its triode design, and its physical construction make it a unique and significant component in the evolution of electronic communication. Whether used for its intended purpose or as a collector's item, the Deforest 2Q15 is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the early days of radio.

Pros of buying a Deforest 2Q15 1919 oscillating transmitting tube:

3. Educational value: Owning an original 1919 oscillating transmitting tube can provide a unique learning opportunity for those interested in the history of electronics and technology.

Cons of buying a Deforest 2Q15 1919 oscillating transmitting tube:

1. Limited functionality: Given its age and technology, the tube may have limited functionality compared to modern electronic components.

2. Fragility: Oscillating tubes are delicate and can easily be damaged or destroyed, which may require specialized knowledge and equipment to repair.

3. Cost: Due to its rarity and historical significance, a Deforest 2Q15 1919 oscillating transmitting tube can be expensive to purchase, especially if it is in good condition.

Conclusion:

Buying a Deforest 2Q15 1919 oscillating transmitting tube can be a rewarding experience for collectors and electronics enthusiasts, but it is important to consider its limitations and potential risks. If you are interested in restoring the tube to its original function or using it in a vintage radio set, it may be worth the investment. However, if you are looking for a modern electronic component with more functionality, you may want to consider other options.

Recommendation:

If you are interested in purchasing a Deforest 2Q15 1919 oscillating transmitting tube, it is important to do your research and ensure that you are buying from a reputable source. Look for a tube that is in good condition and has a clear and accurate description of its history and functionality. Details:

I highly doubt you'll find another one. Very hard to find early DeForest tube. This is only the fourth one I've ever had in nearly 30 years now of avid collecting. Some of them almost never show up for sale.

I'm selling some rare tubes from my collection this week to raise cash for unexpected expenses. Unfortunately it has open filament, but still rare tubes and displays well.
